Toshiba Reportedly to Release the World's First Glasses-Free 3D TV's

According to a report in the Japanese newspaper Yomiyuri, Toshiba will release 3D TV's later this year that will not require the use of 3D glasses. When questioned Toshiba did not confirm this exciting rumor but replied with the typical "no comment". Company spokesman Yuko Sugahar said only that, "Toshiba has such technology in the works." The ability to display 3D technology without glasses is possible through what is called "autostereoscopic 3D". The technology uses thousands of tiny mirrors within the TV which emits light in numerous directions making it seem as if the images projected on the screen have real depth. This allows everyone viewing the images to enjoy 3D viewing without the use of special glasses. This "autostereoscopic" 3D technology has already been available to consumers in 3D digital photo frames and display screens on 3D digital cameras, but until this report it was not expected to be available on consumer TV's for a couple of years. According to the report Toshiba will release three autostereoscopic 3D TV models this holiday season with the units reportedly costing thousands of dollars.
